BMW 120d/320d N47 Stage 1 – maintenance, repair, chip tuning, and 0-100 test. Is it cheap to own?

OP OP! Article about the BMW 1 Series F20 with the N47 120d engine.

Our unit was imported from Korea in 2019 and had front-end damage. The first owner after Korea drove 20,000 kilometers before selling the car to our manager Slava for $13,500. He drove it for another 25,000 kilometers, and now the car is with its third owner.

Configuration: xenon headlights, front M bumper, Chinese multimedia system, rearview camera, parking sensors, electric sports seats with heating, sunroof, sports steering wheel.

Annual maintenance costs: two engine oil changes – $200, front brake pad replacement and brake disc resurfacing – $100. Total maintenance cost for the year – $300.

Annual repair costs: coolant leak fixed – flange and gasket replacement – $300, front shock absorbers replaced – $200. Total repair cost for the year – $500.

Tuning: DPF removal – $100, engine remap – $200, transmission chip tuning – $360. Total tuning cost for the year – $660.

Performance:

Before engine and transmission tuning:

- 0-100 km/h – 7 seconds

- 100-200 km/h – 27 seconds

After engine and transmission tuning:

- 0-100 km/h – 5.9 seconds

- 100-200 km/h – 20 seconds

Maintaining this diesel car is not much different from a gasoline one, except for occasional fuel filter replacements.

Conclusion: Over a year and 35,000 kilometers, excluding tuning, $300 was spent on maintenance and $500 on repairs.
