The era of the F10 has come to an end. There’s nothing left to retrofit, upgrade, or change — everything has been done.
This step wasn’t planned for now. But sometimes the moment comes on its own.
And here it is — unexpected for everyone.
New Garage Racer Project: BMW G12 740d — An Unexpected but Perfect Choice
A new episode has been released on the Garage Racer YouTube channel, where the team introduced their latest project — the BMW 7 Series in the G12 body, specifically the 740d with the B57 diesel engine. This car replaces the previously owned BMW F10, which had been upgraded to its maximum potential.
An Unexpected Choice: From F10 to G12
Previously, the owner was fully satisfied with the F10 — the car had been extensively retrofitted and required no further upgrades. However, everything changed after testing the BMW G20 M340, which impressed with its performance but didn’t fit family needs.
As a result, the choice shifted to a completely different class — a full-size luxury sedan, the BMW G12.
Key factors:
B57 diesel engine (740d, twin-turbo)
rich configuration
family comfort
strong retrofit potential
Vehicle Condition and Initial Work
At the time of purchase, the car had around 190,000 km, with a significant portion being highway mileage.
Identified issues:
sandblasted front bumper and headlights
cracked windshield
cosmetic damage on the rear bumper
valve cover sweating
alternator noise
Work already completed:
full service (fluids, oils, filters)
transmission service (automatic gearbox, differentials, transfer case)
interior detailing
installation of M Performance elements
wider track (spacers)
software-based air suspension lowering
Equipment: Strengths and Weak Points
The car comes with a solid base, but with some compromises.
What it has:
M package
Adaptive LED headlights
rear comfort package (screens, tablet, sunshades)
digital cluster and NBT EVO
air ionization system
ceramic controls
surround view
Harman Kardon audio
What’s missing:
driver assistance systems (blind spot, traffic sign recognition, KAFAS)
front seat massage
All these upgrades are already planned for future episodes.
Driving Character: Comfort + Performance
Despite its size, the BMW G12 740d delivers strong performance:
320 hp
0–100 km/h ≈ 5.3 sec
xDrive all-wheel drive
Fuel consumption:
city: ~12–13 L
highway: ~7.5–8 L
relaxed driving: from 6 L
The air suspension allows flexible tuning — from ultra-soft Comfort+ to more responsive Sport Individual.
Why the G12 Is Underrated
The episode highlights that the BMW G11/G12 remains underrated on the market.
Main reasons:
fear of air suspension costs
негативный опыт с предыдущими поколениями (E65, F01)
perceived high maintenance costs
In reality:
most components are repairable
the B57 engine shows strong reliability
it offers a level of comfort unavailable in G20 or G30
Project Plans
Garage Racer has outlined the next steps:
installation of driver assistance systems (KAFAS, blind spot)
windshield replacement
intake cleaning (including walnut blasting)
alternator restoration
additional comfort upgrades
Conclusion
The BMW G12 740d project marks a transition from a driver-focused sedan to a full-size luxury car for daily and family use. Despite its mileage and age, the vehicle delivers excellent comfort, solid performance, and strong upgrade potential.
Garage Racer will continue to develop this project in upcoming episodes, covering technical work, retrofits, and real-world ownership experience.
