OP OP! BMW E61 with the LEGENDARY M57 engine in an upgraded Stage 3 configuration. In this episode, we’ll talk about the car, go over all the changes since the last video, dive into the Stage 3 tuning, the TurboSystems turbo, overall setup, exhaust system, and brakes. We’ll also run a dyno test and measure 100–200 km/h acceleration, plus much more.
BMW M57 Stage 3+ Project: The Path to 500+ HP and the Limits of a Diesel Engine
On the Garage Racer YouTube channel, a continuation of one of the most talked-about projects has been released — a heavily modified diesel BMW powered by the M57 engine. After a long break, the team returned to the car to show what has changed over the past year and what results have been achieved.
Project Configuration: What Has Changed
The build is based on a 3.0-liter M57 diesel engine, which originally produced around 400 HP (Stage 2+ with a hybrid turbo). The current setup has evolved into a full Stage 3+ configuration with significant upgrades.
Key modifications:
Turbo Systems HTD3379 turbocharger installed (comparable to a Garrett ~35)
Enlarged compressor wheel (up to 79 mm)
Boost pressure reached 3.4 bar (later reduced to 3.2 bar)
Wagner Evo 3 Competition intercooler installed (~22 liters)
Custom intake and reinforced piping
Upgraded fuel system (rail pressure up to 2300 bar)
Additional fuel cooling system
Advanced monitoring sensors installed (boost, EGT, oil temperature, etc.)
At the same time, the engine itself remains completely stock, except for upgraded valve springs.
Exhaust and Mechanical Setup
The project features a fully custom exhaust system:
Main pipe diameter: 90 mm
Split into dual 76 mm sections
Custom V-band configuration
Optimized for minimal flow restriction
Transmission upgrades include:
Ceramic clutch with a dual-diaphragm pressure plate
Single-mass flywheel
Reinforced setup for high torque loads
Suspension and braking system:
Front brakes from BMW G30 M Performance
Rear setup based on BMW M5 E60 (370 mm discs)
Planned upgrade to 6-piston front calipers
Suspension: KW Variant 2 with custom modifications
Dyno Results
The car was tested on a dyno with the following results:
Power: ~467 HP
Torque: ~960 Nm
Intake air temperature: ~43°C
Despite extensive modifications, the setup has not yet reached the target of 500+ HP.
Why 500+ HP Hasn’t Been Achieved Yet
The team identified several limiting factors:
High ambient temperatures during testing
Fuel injectors operating at their limit
No water-methanol injection (not yet used)
Temporary exhaust configuration
Lack of an equal-length exhaust manifold
Next Steps
To reach the 500+ HP goal, the following upgrades are planned:
Installation of an equal-length exhaust manifold
Upgrade to higher-capacity injectors (e.g., from 535d)
ECU fine-tuning
Implementation of a water-methanol system
Further intake and exhaust optimization
Nitrous oxide is also being considered as an additional performance solution.
Project Philosophy
The core idea behind the build is to extract maximum performance from a stock diesel engine without opening the engine internals.
The goal is clear:achieve more than 500 HP without a full engine rebuild
The symbolic benchmark is to exceed 507 HP — matching the output of the BMW M5 E60.
Conclusion
The BMW M57 project by Garage Racer demonstrates just how far a diesel engine can be pushed. While the current results are already impressive, the team continues to push toward the 500+ HP milestone.
Further upgrades, new dyno runs, and potentially record-breaking results are still ahead.
