OP OP! On our website, you’ve seen many articles about the BMW F30, but many people have the question: which F30 should you choose? Which engine, modification, transmission, and drive type?
The essence of the article: we won’t dive into the technical details of each engine on the F30; we’ll take a clear look at the AUTO.RIA market!
As of spring 2022, we had 650 cars for sale, of which 80% had gasoline engines and 20% had diesel engines. The market share of cars with the 328i index is 40%, and the 320i is 20%.
The main nuance of the N20 engine (328i and 320i) is the need to replace the timing chain every 100,000 kilometers.
The main competitor to the 2.0 gasoline N20 engine is the 2.0 diesel N47. Theoretically, the N47 is more reliable than the N20. On average, the N47 is more expensive than the N20, and the mileage on diesel vehicles is much higher. Potential buyers of the N47 engine often end up choosing the N20 due to engine power (N20 328i – 245 hp, N47 320d – 184 hp), price, and mileage.

BMW F30 328i xDrive (stock) – 0-100 and 100-200 km/h:
- 0-100 km/h – 5.97 seconds
- 100-200 km/h – 18.87 seconds
BMW F31 320d (stock) – 0-100 and 100-200 km/h:
- 0-100 km/h – 8.06 seconds
- 100-200 km/h – 35.34 seconds
What’s the importance of the BMW F30 with the N20 and N47 engines? The N20 holds 60% of the F30 market, while the N47 holds 20%.
Let’s start with gasoline engines: the weakest versions are the 316i and 318i with the N13 engine – very rare specimens that I have hardly ever encountered in my life.

Now, let’s move on to the remaining 20% of the BMW F30 market!
The 330i B46/B48 occupies 5% of the market; compared to the N20, these cars are in a different price category, with prices higher because these vehicles are from the facelift, with better configurations and a more reliable engine.

The 335i N55 also occupies 5% of the market; this car is in a similar price category to the 330i. This engine is popular in the 5 Series and X5 but not in the 3 Series. Prices for such cars are 1.5 times higher than for the 328i, and they are the same age as the 328i.

The 340i B58 occupies 5% of the market. This car will be top-tier for connoisseurs, for those who specifically want this model. Prices for these cars are 2-3 times higher than for the 328i. If you don’t value power, there’s no point in overpaying.

Conclusion: When clients ask us which F30 to buy, I cannot give a precise answer, which is why we made a video on YouTube and wrote this article.
A short takeaway from me: whatever BMW F30 you want to buy, there’s a 60% chance you’ll end up with an N20 328i, a 20% chance you’ll get an N47 320d, and only a 5% chance you’ll come across rare models like the 330i, 335i, or 340i.
It’s important to understand that the choice of a car is always yours. Buy what brings you real pleasure. A car that you like and that suits your style will always be a step ahead. Even potential breakdowns will be easier to accept if the car truly resonates with you.
