A few years ago, the BMW 3 Series in the E46 body was quite a popular model, and many wonder which engine to choose when buying a BMW E46.
Engine N42/N46 – this engine is not recommended for purchase. These engines were installed on facelifted cars after 2001, and the gasoline engine has 4 cylinders. It features the Valvetronic system, which makes it quite problematic and delicate. The oil seals dry out quickly (recommended to be replaced every 80-100,000 kilometers), the piston rings can get carboned up, and there are frequent issues with the Valvetronic and Vanos systems. The timing chains may stretch, and the chain tensioners may break.
Engine M43 – this is the predecessor of the gasoline engine N42, installed on pre-facelift models. It’s a 4-cylinder gasoline engine, a simple engine without Vanos and Valvetronic. The timing chain needs to be replaced every 200-250,000 kilometers. In general, it’s a reliable engine, but it lacks power reserves.
Engine M52TU – this is the predecessor of the M54 gasoline engine, featuring 6 cylinders, an aluminum block, and the first-generation Vanos system (which may have issues). It may require timing phase adjustments, and sometimes there are problems with the throttle body. Overall, it’s a decent engine, and it can be recommended for purchase.
Engine M54 – this gasoline engine has 6 cylinders, an aluminum block, cast iron liners, and two Vanos systems. The engines are almost identical to the M52, with differences in the camshaft, and the M54 has an electronic throttle. Common problems include the crankcase ventilation valve (CCV), and the valve cover may crack. The engine doesn’t break down often and provides good power, making it a recommended option for purchase.
