The BMW M4 has returned to our channel after a long hiatus! 🔥This time, we gave it a stylish upgrade—we installed European taillights instead of the American ones. The car retains its original appearance, but with the new accents, it looks even more harmonious and stylish.

In the video you will see: - the process of replacing the rear optics; - the difference between American and European lights; - the final appearance of the BMW M4 after the update.

Installing European taillights on a BMW M4 from the US: timing, cost, and features

BMWs imported from the US share one distinctive feature: red rear turn signals. For many owners, this is not only a matter of aesthetics but also practicality. The European version, with its yellow turn signals, looks more modern, is more visible on the road, and is closer to BMW's native design for the EU market.

Using a BMW M4 as an example, Garage Racer specialists demonstrated how to replace American optics with European ones, how long it takes, and what nuances arise during the process.

What is the difference between American and European lanterns?

The main difference is the color and configuration of the turn signals:

  • In the American version, the turn signal is integrated into the brake light and glows red.

  • The European version has a separate yellow turn signal.

  • EU-lamps have an additional section added, which makes the light more “massive” and visually rich.

  • The turn signal works on both the outer and inner parts of the lamp

Besides the appearance, there are also technical differences:

  • European headlights have an additional pin for the turn signal.

  • New wiring is required

  • Control unit coding required

Features of installation on BMW M4

Unlike many other BMW models, installation on the M4 is more complicated due to its design:

  • The wiring for the external lights runs outside the body

  • To access it you need to remove the rear bumper.

  • The wiring is routed through factory channels to the BDC unit.

  • Additionally, partial disassembly of the interior (seats, sills) is required.

This makes installation more labor-intensive compared to, for example, the G20 or G30 models, where access to the wiring is easier.

Stages of work

  1. Removing the rear bumper

  2. Partial disassembly of the interior

  3. Laying additional wiring

  4. Connecting to the BDC unit

  5. Installation of lanterns

  6. System coding

  7. Checking the operation and assembly

All work is carried out while maintaining the factory wiring and insulation logic.

How much does installation cost?

Average market prices:

  • Set of European lanterns: ~1200 €

  • Job:

    • standard models (G20, G30, G01): ~12,000 UAH

    • BMW M4 (including bumper removal): ~14,000 UAH

Additionally recommended:

  • Replacement of the light unit with a European one (about $200)

Completion deadlines

The full cycle of work takes:

  • 1 working day (from morning to evening)

The time frame depends on the complexity of the specific vehicle and the availability of additional equipment (for example, water-methanol systems, as in this project).

Result

After installation the car receives:

  • A more modern look

  • Clear and bright LED light

  • Full yellow turn signals according to the European standard

  • Improved visual "mass" of the rear optics

For BMW owners in the US, this is one of the most popular and justifiable retrofits, which simultaneously improves appearance and increases safety.

Conclusion

Replacing American taillights with European ones is more than just a cosmetic upgrade; it's a complete technical upgrade. Despite the extra work (especially on the BMW M4), the result is completely worth the investment in terms of both aesthetics and functionality.

Garage Racer performs such work on most BMW models, including the F- and G-series, with the possibility of installation both in Ukraine and Europe.
