HOW TO MAKE YOUR BMW LOOK 10 YEARS YOUNGER? INSTALLING NBT EVO IN THE BMW X5 E70

An interesting video was released on the Garage Racer YouTube channel, showcasing a custom retrofit for the BMW X5 E70. In the video, the channel owner Vadym explains and demonstrates how this vehicle can be significantly updated by installing the modern BMW NBT Evo multimedia system, which is used in newer BMW models.
Despite the fact that the E70 already belongs to a previous generation of the X5, these vehicles are still very popular. There are many of them on the roads of Ukraine, and owners continue to buy, maintain, and upgrade them. That is why such retrofits remain highly relevant.
Why an upgrade was needed
This BMW was equipped with a basic factory multimedia system from an older generation. Similar systems were used in the early 2000s and were installed, among others, in the BMW 7 Series E65. Today they look very outdated and offer limited functionality.
In the video, Vadym jokingly calls this multimedia system a “Tamagotchi,” because by modern standards it has almost no useful features. It only allows viewing basic information, while the interface and capabilities have long been outdated.
However, BMW E-series vehicles had one interesting feature — climate control could be managed through the multimedia system. For many drivers this was unusual, but at the same time it was quite advanced for its time.
What was installed in this BMW X5 E70
To modernize the vehicle, the service installed the modern BMW NBT Evo multimedia system. This solution essentially brings technologies from newer BMW models into an older vehicle platform.
The following components were used for the installation:
main NBT Evo multimedia unit
display from the BMW 5 Series G30 with touchscreen control
new iDrive controller
special Car Systems module
Wi-Fi antenna for wireless Apple CarPlay
wiring for connecting the system
OABR cable for further multimedia coding
A new plastic trim piece for the iDrive controller is also installed. It requires slight modification to fit properly in the interior of the BMW E70.
Result after installation
After the work is completed, the vehicle receives a much more modern interface and new features, while all factory vehicle functions remain available.
Through the new system you can view:
oil level
service intervals
vehicle settings
lighting parameters
other BMW system settings
In other words, the new multimedia system works fully integrated with the vehicle and looks as if it was installed from the factory.
Where the work was performed
The video was filmed at the new Garage Racer service branch located in Kyiv at 4B Velyka Kiltseva Street. The service team specializes in maintenance, repair, and retrofitting of BMW vehicles from different generations — from older E-series models to modern ones.
The service also has an automotive electronics specialist named Semen, who performs similar retrofits and BMW modernization projects.
